For My Next Trick

I want to learn to play the fiddle. Not the violin, if you get confused. I have found (and you can all laugh at me, but don't tell me you laughed) that the older I get the more I like fiddle music and bluegrass music. I know, I'm crazy.

I really like that one part in The Alamo where Davy Crockett plays the fiddle along with the Mexicans' drums. That is my favorite part of that movie and consequently, it is my goal to learn to play that particular melody. Someday.

I'll add that to my list of learning to scrapbook better, becoming an artist and getting a book published. I hope that writing this stuff out does some good eventually. It kind of forces me to remember my goals when I tell them to others.

I need to get a fiddle . . .

Do you ever listen to Alison Krauss? I saw her perform about 10 years ago and she was amazing. That's when I was first introduced to bluegrass and fiddle playing.

I have a friend who had always wanted to learn the banjo and finally at age 45, he is taking lessons.

Go for it and good luck!

I haven't really listened to much Alison Krauss. I have liked bluegrass music for a long time, but have failed to purchase much of it (I never download unless I am paying for the downloads, but I prefer cds overall). Her music is good though, from what I have heard.

Thanks!

I want to be learn the piano so I will be able to play "The Heart Asks Pleasure First".

That's setting the bar extremely high :-)

I love Alison Krauss and bluegrass. She plays both violin and viola in her recordings! Also, try Mark O'Conner, his work is excellent.

I was always more interested in jazz viola, but my good friend has had a love affair with fiddle music and he can play it like nobody's business. (For my nitpickyness of the day, you play fiddle music, but you still play a violin. The instrument is the same, the style of music is different.)

Violins are relatively cheap, I advise looking on eBay. I got a much better viola than I could have afforded retail, that way.

That movie also inspired me to play the fiddle, if only for one night. Amarillo By Morning by George Strait actually gets me playing the air fiddle.
